Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point injections are an excellent treatment option for patients with TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorders) and headaches associated with myofascial pain.  Trigger points are essentially painful knots in the muscle that become sensitive when the muscle is moved in a certain way.  These trigger points are known for causing myofascial pain, where the knots often refer pain to another part of our body. These knots develop as a result of many factors including stress, tension, overuse and muscle injuries.  When these trigger points are broken up, many patients find relief in their TMJ disorders.

Treatment:

Dr. Platt begins treatment by identifying what muscles are causing the discomfort through palpating each muscle. Once the precise location is determined, a local anesthetic is injected into the area. A small needle is then inserted into the trigger point and manipulated to break up the knot, providing relief. In many cases, BOTOX (botulinum toxin) is also used in these areas to help relax the surrounding muscles.
