Botox/Botulinum Toxin

Botox/Botulinum Toxin

While Botox/Xeomin (botulinum toxin) is most commonly associated with cosmetic procedures, it is recently being used in conjunction for therapeutic treatment of TMJ disorders, headaches, and myofascial pain.

Botox injections are a minimally invasive treatment that does more than smooth crow's feet and frown lines for up to 4 months.

How is Botox used in dentistry?

Dr. Platt may recommend using Botox injections if you are suffering with:

  • TMJ disorders
  • Parafunctional clenching or grinding (bruxism)
  • Trismus or lockjaw, caused by muscle spasms
  • Headaches, often associated with these conditions

While botulinum toxin is not the first course of action for many of these issues, it may help when all other options have failed.

How long does Botox/Xeomin take to work?

Most botox injections take around 20-30 mins to administer. There are often quick and painless as very small needles are used. Some patients may start to notice relief in 2-3 days, but most affects do not fully take place until 10-14 days later. It is recommended that you schedule a 2 week post op.

The amount of botox units or injections needed vary patient to patient and depend on the severity and specifics of the muscle being affected. Because of this, your dentist will start with the minimal amount required. At the 2 week post op, if needed, Dr. Platt can re-evaluate and administer more as needed.

Are there any side effects of Botox?

Botox is typically well-tolerated and generally safe for most patients. Botox is not recommended if pregnant or nursing. Like any medication, botox may cause side effects, but are mild and temporary. Most common side effects include bruising and slight swelling or pain at the injection site.

Dr. Platt is trained and certified by the American Academy of Facial Esthetics to administer Botulinum toxin.
